Chapter Eighteen

I was amazed to see that most people went back to their dancing as though a woman hadn’t just run into the room screaming but, once I understood the problem, there was someone I had to tell. Nurse Crouch was at the party, and I was fairly confident that her first-aid skills would be better than mine.

“Of course, this sort of thing wouldn’t happen if they’d kept a school nurse on the payroll,” she exclaimed. Although I somehow doubted this was the case, she was willing to come along with us, so I wasn’t about to argue. “They invest all their money these days in computers and security systems, but there’s no dedicated member of staff to put a plaster on little Billy’s knee or take Suzie’s temperature. There’s no one to make sure kids are getting their daily carton of milk or to talk to each class about the food pyramid. This world isn’t what it used to be.”

She was a big woman with shoulders that were broader than an ox’s back and a round, fleshy face that was stuck in a constant state of disapproval.

“Good idea,” she grumbled, as she stopped at the door to her old room. “I’ll just need one thing.” She popped inside, then reappeared a moment later looking very confused. “There’s a very polite man being projected onto the wall in there. He’s pouring out cups of tea for a group of chatty, middle-aged people and he could see me as I walked in.”

“Yes, that’ll be my dad. I’d explain what they’re all doing but…” I didn’t know how to finish that sentence, so I turned to my friend, who was apparently still disturbed by whatever she’d seen. “Shandy, can you tell us exactly what happened?”

She kept her eyes dead ahead as she navigated the corridor back to the West Block. “Well… Danny and I followed Verity. She was looking very pleased with herself, and we knew she was up to something. But just before we got to the toilets, we lost sight of her around a bend. We couldn’t follow her too closely, as she’d have spotted us otherwise.”

She’d fallen into that gloomy sort of hush that witnesses often adopt, and so I prompted her for more. “What happened next? Did you go into the toilet or find her somewhere else?”

She looked at me as though she’d forgotten I was there. It was rare to see Shandy being anything but cheery and bright. “There was no sign of Verity in that corridor, and I felt sure she must have gone into the toilets; it was the only obvious place. Danny waited outside because he said he wasn’t the sort to go into a ladies’ toilet without permission. I thought that was rather sweet, and so I gave him a big kiss and—.
